Texas snow is usually a light dusting that melts quickly from rising temperatures and residual heat in the ground. Not so today. Last night, it dipped into the single digits for the first time in my nearly 20 years in Austin and set a record for this date. It did not get above freezing today, and tonight will be another record low.
Texans don't know how to handle this. Our neighborhood message board has been a flurry of information on weatherizing beyond just covering the outdoor hose bibs. We had frozen pipes in the house, which thankfully thawed quickly. We are fortunate—others are experiencing power outages or rolling blackouts.
Stay safe and warm.
